Imagine my surprise when I opened my mailbox this morning, sorted through the pile of junk mail (that really needs to stop), and spotted an envelope from The Explorers Club membership department!
What could it be‽ (Yes, I really did just use an Interrobang) After several discussions with other club members and speculation about the future of the membership cards, it seemed that the cards were the last part of the TEC collateral that doesn’t appear to be made of sustainable materials, or at least I think it isn’t. Maybe there was a delay in issuing the cards while the club searched for a more sustainable option. Perhaps membership cards were finally left in the past. This being my very first TEC membership card, I’m not sure if I keep this card for subsequent years or if a new one is issued each year.
A membership card is something of a legacy item representing membership in a club, but having a card completes the whole ‘membership’ experience. I do enjoy having the card. Truly.
Moving forward, it would be nice to see a card made of some other material. Perhaps a card made of Bamboo, wood, or durable cellulose or degradable plastic product. This would help TEC to move towards a more fully responsible and sustainable membership collateral experience.
Until then, I’ll keep my new card in my wallet and be at the ready to pull it out should my membership ever be challenged!
